Parkinson's Disease: Ways of taking treatment

Home | Parkinson's Disease: Treatment Overview | Parkinson's Disease: Ways of taking treatment

As with most other medication, treatment for Parkinson’s disease is generally taken by mouth in the form of capsules, tablets or in a liquid. But there is also a dopamine agonist available as a patch that is applied to the skin. It delivers the drug into the body through the skin.

There are advantages to a transdermal patch. This system of drug delivery is:

  • Practical and convenient

  • Continuous

  • Particularly suitable if you find swallowing difficult

  • Not interacting with food or absorption if you have a stomach upset

  • Once-a-day is easier to remember

In a recent survey of patients with Parkinson’s disease, 61 % stated that they preferred patch treatment.
